Halloween is perhaps the most authentic Greek celebration that survives from ancient times to the present day. Etymologically, “Halloween” means a farewell to meat, meaning meat-eating, as tradition dictates that a long period of fasting follows. Similarly, the Latin word “Carnival” (Carnival-Carnevale) has the same meaning and comes from the words carne (carne = meat) and vale (vale = to greet).
